The Artists’ Parliament is a public space exhibition project to mark the rotating presidencies of the Council of the European Union. The chosen European contemporary artists will represent their country with an exhibition on the Esplanade Solidarność in front of the European Parliament, following the calendar of the rotating presidencies. The organisers have chosen Joël Benzakin and Jeanne Mouffe as the curatorial team to select the artists.
The Office of the Commissioner for Europe and International Organisations of the Brussels-Capital Region, the European Parliament and their partners are pleased to present the exhibition L’Aire d’un Souffle (‘The space of a breath’) by Ann Veronica Janssens and Michel François, the first exhibition organised by The Artists’ Parliament. The exhibition began on 10 January 2024 to mark the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, for which artists Ann Veronica Janssens and Michel François were chosen to present a specific project. Internationally renowned artists, they both represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale in 1999. Ann Veronica Janssens and Michel François exhibit their work all over the world and have pieces in the collections of the most prestigious institutions.
The inauguration was marked with two events. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony in the morning gathered policymakers from the European and Brussels landscape for speeches by Rainer Wieland (Vice-President of the European Parliament), Karine Lalieux (Belgian Federal Minister) and Rudi Vervoort (Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region). In the afternoon, a crowd of onlookers from the world of art and culture came the Esplanade to check out the new work and hear speeches from Ans Persoons (Brussels State Secretary) and Alain Hutchinson (Brussels Commissioner for Europe).
After Belgium, the next country represented will be Hungary from July to December 2024, followed by Poland from January to June 2025 and Denmark from July to December 2025. Each country taking over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union is invited to support the artistic project selected to represent it.

The Artists’ Parliament est un projet d'exposition dans l’espace public à l'occasion des présidences tournantes du Conseil de l’Union Européenne. Les artistes contemporains européens choisis représenteront leur pays avec une exposition sur l’Esplanade Solidarność devant le Parlement européen en suivant le rythme des présidences tournantes. L'inauguration a été marquée par deux événements. Le matin, une cérémonie officielle a rassemblé des décideurs politiques du paysage européen et bruxellois pour voir Rainer Wieland (vice-président du Parlement européen), Karine Lalieux (ministre fédérale belge) et Rudi Vervoort (ministre-président de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale) couper le ruban. L'après-midi, un public de curieux du monde de l'art et de la culture s'est rendu sur l'Esplanade pour découvrir la nouvelle œuvre et écouter les discours d'Ans Persoons (Secrétaire d'Etat bruxellois) et d'Alain Hutchinson (Commissaire bruxellois à l'Europe).
Après la Belgique, la Hongrie sera représentée de juillet à décembre 2024, suivie de la Pologne de janvier à juin 2025 et du Danemark de juillet à décembre 2025. Chaque pays prenant la Présidence tournante du Conseil de l’Union Européenne est invité à soutenir le projet artistique sélectionné pour le représenter.

The Artists’ Parliament is een tentoonstellingsproject in de openbare ruimte ter gelegenheid van het roulerende voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie. Hiervoor worden hedendaagse kunstenaars gekozen uit het land dat het roulerende voorzitterschap bekleedt om hun land te vertegenwoordigen met een tentoonstelling op de Esplanade Solidarność aan het Europees Parlement. Het door de organisatoren gekozen curatorenteam bestaat uit Joël Benzakin en Jeanne Mouffe; zij zijn verantwoordelijk voor de selectie van de kunstenaars.
Het Commissariaat voor Europa en de internationale organisaties van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, het Europees Parlement en hun partners presenteren de tentoonstelling L’Aire d’un Souffle (“Weggeblazen”) van Ann Veronica Janssens en Michel François, de eerste tentoonstelling van The Artists’ Parliament. De eerste editie van The Artists’ Parliament is te bewonderen vanaf 10 januari 2024 ter gelegenheid van het Belgische voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie. Tijdens deze editie zullen de kunstenaars Ann Veronica Janssens en Michel François hun project presenteren. Als internationaal gerenommeerde kunstenaars vertegenwoordigden zij beiden België op de Biënnale van Venetië in 1999. Het werk van Ann Veronica Janssens en Michel François wordt overal ter wereld tentoongesteld en is opgenomen in de collecties van de meest prestigieuze instellingen.
De opening werd met twee evenementen ingeluid. Tijdens een officiële inhuldiging werden beleidsmakers uit het Europese en Brusselse landschap samengebracht, om te zien hoe Rainer Wieland (vicevoorzitter van het Europees Parlement), Karine Lalieux (Belgisch federaal minister) en Rudi Vervoort (minister-president van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest) het lint hebben doorgeknipt. In de namiddag kwam een massa toeschouwers uit de kunst- en cultuurwereld naar de Esplanade om het nieuwe werk te bekijken en te luisteren naar toespraken van Ans Persoons (Brusselse Staatssecretaris) en Alain Hutchinson (Brusselse Commissaris voor Europa).
Na België is Hongarije het volgende land dat vertegenwoordigd wordt, van juli tot en met december 2024, gevolgd door Polen van januari tot en met juni 2025 en Denemarken van juli tot en met december 2025. Elk land dat het roulerende voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie overneemt, wordt verzocht steun te verlenen aan het kunstproject dat is geselecteerd om het te vertegenwoordigen.
