The UK's departure from the EU brought major changes for the thriving British community of Brussels, and totally changed the rules and regulations for UK citizens hoping to move here. Throughout the negotiations and transition, the Expat Welcome Desk of commissioner.brussels strove to keep UK citizens informed. But what is the picture now, as we approach three years since end of the Brexit transition period?

  • How is the British community of Brussels evolving?
  • What administrative challenges have pre-Brexit residents and post-Brexit arrivals faced as the new rules on citizens’ rights come into effect?
  • And what should UK citizens and Belgian authorities be aware of for the years ahead?

The report Brexit Impact Scan for UK Citizens in Brussels summarises the key lessons learnt as we updated the information and guidance we offer. Working with legal experts, we carried out a survey, created a new online helpdesk, delivered a series of webinars and newsletters, and responded to numerous individual questions. The result is a set of fascinating observations about citizens’ rights from an Expat Welcome Desk that has become a real centre of expertise on the post-Brexit landscape.

Join us on Wednesday 29 November for a panel discussion and reception as we launch the Brexit Impact Scan and close this two-year project funded by the citizens’ rights pillar of the EU’s Brexit Adjustment Reserve. The event promises to be a celebratory evening full of interesting data and practical advice for anyone interested in the local British community.
